Aside
- A dramatic device in which a character speaks to the audience and the audience realizes that what is revealed to them is NOT revealed to other characters. It may be spoken directly to the audience
Bard
A poet especially a lyric poet; Shakespeare referred to as the Bard
Blank Verse -
- Verse without rhyme especially that which uses iambic pentameter
Chorus -
An actor or actors in Elizabethan drama who recites the prologue and epilogue to a play and sometimes comments on the action.
Comedy -
A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the conflict; hero of story attains the desired goal.
Comic Relief
Humorous scene dialogue or speech in a play that provides relief during emotional parts.
Contracted words -
Words in which a letter has been left out.
Deception -
A trick; in Shakespearean plays a character is usually intentionally deceived for a specific purpose.
Double entendre -
A phrase or figure of speech that could have two meanings or that could be understood in two different ways.
Dramatic irony -
Occurs in a piece of literature when the audience knows something that some characters in the narrative do not. The spectator of a play or reader of a novel thus has information that at least some characters are aware of which affects the way the audience members react to the plot.
Elizabethan Era -
Reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England (1558 - 1603) during which time Shakespeare lived and composed his works.
Ellipsis -
Occurs when a word or phrase is left out.
Epilogue -
A short poem or speech spoken directly to the audience following the conclusion of a play.
Euphemism -
A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.
Exposition -
The part of the play that provides the background information needed to understand the characters and the action.
First Folio -
Shakespeare’s plays were first printed in a single volume (1623)
Foil -
A character who contrasts another character usually the protagonist
Folio -
A large sheet of paper folded once in the middle making two leaves or four pages of a book or manuscript;
Globe Theater -
London theater where Shakespeare’s plays first performed
Iambic Pentameter -
A line of verse with FIVE metrical feet each consisting of one short or unstressed syllable
