Shape Of Moelcules Flashcards
What are a pair of electrons in a covalent bond called ?
Bonding pairs
What are electron pairs ?
Clouds of negative charge so there is mutual repulsion pulling them as far away from each other as possible.
What is the valence sheel electron pair repulsion theory ?
Electron pairs repel eachother to get as far away from eachother. They want to gain the greatest separation for minimum repulsion.
What type of substances does the valence sheet electron pair repulsion theory apply to ?
Simple covalent molecules only
What are bond angles ?
The angle between 2 covalent bonds
How many and what type of bonds does a linear molecule have ?
2 bonding pairs
How many and what type of bonds does a trigonometry planar molecule have ?
3 bonding pairs
How many and what type of bonds does a tetrahedral molecule have ?
4 bonding pairs
How many and what type of bonds does a triagonal bipyramid have ?
5 bonding pairs
How many and what type of bonds does an octahedral molecule have ?
6 bonding pairs
How many and what type of bonds does a bent molecule have ?
2 bonding pairs and one lone pair
How many and what type of bonds does a triagonal pyramidal molecule have ?
3 bonding, one lone pair
How many and what type of bonds does a square planar have ?
4 bonding pairs and 2 lone pairs.
What bond angle is in a linear molecule ?
180 degrees
What bond angle is in a triagonal planar ?
120 decrees
What is the bond angle of a tetrahedral ?
109.5 degrees
What is the bond angle in a triagonal bipyramid ?
90 degrees and 120 degrees
What are the bond angles in an octahedral molecule ?
90 degrees
What are the bond angles of a bent molecule ?
117.5 degrees
What is the bond angle of a triagonal pyramidal ?
107 degrees
What is the bonding angle of a square planar ?
90 degrees
What is repulsion order and what does this mean.
LP-LP>LP-BP>BP-BP
Two lone pairs bonding has the strongest repulsion.
Two bonding pairs bonding has he weakest repulsion.
How does the presence of lone pairs affect bond angles ?
Reduces the bond angle.
What will happen if more lone pairs are in a molecule ?
The bond angle will become smaller.
