For AirPods and supported Beats headphones, you can see their location and play a sound on them when they’re near your device and connected to Bluetooth. For supported AirPods, you can also see their location via the Find My network for up to 24 hours after they last connected to your device, even if they’re not nearby. Automatically unlock your Mac with Apple Watch Auto Unlock
Just wake up your Mac when you’re wearing your Apple Watch and you’re ready to go – without typing a password.
The first time you log in after you’ve turned on, restarted or logged out of your Mac, you must enter your password manually. After that, Apple Watch will log in for you.
How to approve password requests with Apple Watch
You can also use your Apple Watch to approve other requests to enter your administrator password. This works any time you need to type your Mac password, such as when viewing passwords in Safari settings, unlocking a locked note or approving installation of an app.
When your Mac asks you to approve with your Apple Watch or enter your password, just double-click the side button on your Apple Watch. Your password will be entered automatically without having to type it.
How to set up Auto Unlock
Make sure your devices meet the system requirements for Auto Unlock and are set up as follows:
Your Mac and Apple Watch have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
Your Mac and Apple Watch are signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication.
Your Apple Watch is using a passcode.
If your Mac is using macOS Ventura or later:
Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
In the sidebar, click Touch ID & Password (or Login Password, depending on your Mac model).
In the Apple Watch section on the right, turn on the setting for your Apple Watch.
If your Mac is using an earlier version of macOS:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
Click Security & Privacy.
Select “Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac” or “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac”.
Having issues with Auto-Unlock?
If you’re having difficulty getting Auto Unlock to work, turn the unlock feature off and back on:
On your Mac, open System Settings (or System Preferences) and turn off the Apple Watch setting described in the previous section.
Restart your Mac.
Turn the Apple Watch setting back on, as described in the previous section.
If that doesn’t work, install the latest macOS updates and watchOS updates. Also make sure your Mac isn’t using internet sharing or screen sharing, which are turned off by default.
When a device passcode or password is required for TouchID
Users can use their passcode or password anytime instead of Face ID or Touch ID, but there are situations where biometrics aren’t permitted. The following security-sensitive operations always require entry of a passcode or password:
Updating the software
Erasing the device
Viewing or changing passcode settings
Installing configuration profiles
Unlocking the Security & Privacy pane in System Preferences on Mac
Unlocking the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences on Mac (if FileVault is turned on)
A passcode or password is also required if the device is in any of the following states:
The device has just been turned on or restarted
The user has logged out of their Mac account (or hasn’t yet logged in).
The user hasn’t unlocked their device for more than 48 hours.
The user hasn’t used their passcode or password to unlock their device for 156 hours (six and a half days), and the user hasn’t used a biometric to unlock their device in 4 hours.
The device has received a remote lock command
The user exited power off / Emergency SOS by pressing and holding either volume button and the Sleep/Wake button simultaneously for 2 seconds and then pressing Cancel.
There were five unsuccessful biometric match attempts (though for usability, the device might offer entering a passcode or password instead of using biometrics after a smaller number of failures).
When a device passcode or password is required for TouchID when Face ID with Mask is enabled
When Face ID with a mask is enabled on an iPhone, it’s available for the next 6.5 hours after one of the following user actions:
Successful Face ID match attempt (with or without a mask)
Device passcode validation
Device unlock with Apple Watch
Any of these actions extends the period by an additional 6.5 hours when performed.
How to Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad
Quick Start occupies both devices, so make sure you choose a time when you won’t need to use your current device for several minutes.
A new iPhone showing the Quick Start screen. The instructions ask you to put your old device near your new one.
Make sure that your current device is connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is on. Turn on your new device and place it near your current device. Follow the onscreen instructions to get started. If the prompt to set up your new device disappears from your current device, restart both devices.
Connect your device to Wi-Fi or your device’s mobile network.
You may be asked to activate your mobile service.
Set up Face ID or Touch ID.
Choose how you want to transfer your data:
If you download from iCloud, your apps and data will be downloaded in the background so that you can start using your new device straight away.
If you transfer directly from your previous device, you’ll need to wait for the transfer to be finished on both devices before you can use them.
Keep your devices near each other and plugged into a power source until the data migration process has finished. Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.

If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then turn off your iPhone and start again.
