What is the first step for treating shock and haemorrhage?
- Call for help
What is the second step of S&H?
- Make environment safe
What is the third step of S&H?
- Take safety precautions (put on gloves)
What is the fourth step of S&H?
- Locate site of bleeding, reassure the patient.
What is the fifth step of S&H?
Apply direct pressure and reassure patient
What is the sixth step of S&H?
- Apply pressure dressings
What is the seventh step of S&H?
- Elevate limb and reassure patient
What do you expect to feel with the patients pulse? Why?
Weak, rapid and thready pulse. Heart rate increases to compensate for loss of blood & blood pressure dropping.
What do you expect to see from the patients blood pressure? Why?
Blood pressure will drop due to loss of blood.
What would you expect to see from the patients breathing? Why?
‘Air hunger’ - rapidly gasping for breath due to loss of oxygen available via blood.
What do you expect the patients skin to be like? Why?
Cool, pale and clammy due to limited blood flow to non essential organs (eg the skin)
What will happen to the level of consciousness? Why?
Consciousness will drop due to reduced oxygen.
What changes will happen to patients mental state? Why?
Patient will be confused and agitated due to lack of oxygen
