Built Osaka castle, by 1590 he owned most of Japan and tried but failed to conquer Korea, became military master of Japan in 1590

He unified Japan and ended the era of sengoku, he also won the battle of sekigahara which made him shogun

1575, Oda Nobunaga used over 1000 guns to defeat a samurai cavalry charge in shitaragahara
When was the battle of sekigahara and what happened?
1600-1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu won and it led to the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. Cannons and guns were used.
What happened in the Imjin war?
Japan attacked Korea with 160 000 troops and they weren’t expecting them to actually attack so they ended up overtaking Korea for 2 months but it got taken back. Hideyoshi’s death ended the war in 1598
Who were the first European visitors to Japan? How and when did they get there?
In 1543, Portuguese trade ship with China was blown off course and ended up in Japan. Japanese called them nanban (southern barbarians)
What did the Portuguese introduce to Japan?
Guns (firearms), used to win the battle of sekigahara. Trade and christianity was also re-introduced
How did the European missionaries communicate with the Japanese?
Through paintings of Jesus and the Madonna
Why did the Japanese think the Europeans were ignorant barbarians?
Because they ate with their fingers and couldn’t speak their language
