Who were the ‘Brown Shirts’ and what did they do?
The ‘Brown Shirts’ were a specific section of the Nazi party that were formed for the purpose of carrying out the Nazi’s violent actions. They would protect the Nazis and were violent towards opposing parties.
What was Kristallnacht and why was it significant?
“Night of Broken Glass”, triggered by the murder of Ernst Vom Rath (Nazi party member). Jews were blamed for this murder without any official evidence, and their homes and businesses were attacked, helping the Nazi’s plan to kick the Jews out of Germany.
Name 2 ways propaganda was used in WW2 (1 from Allies, 1 from Axis).
Allies → Used to get women involved in war, rationing posters, warning people to watch what they say, sending children out of London (Operation Pied Piper)
Axis → Gave hope to Germans even during the worst parts of the war, rallying support for war effort, justifying their actions, spreading negative ideas of Jews
Why was the Holocaust a genocide?
Because the Germans had specifically targeted all the Jews they could find, with the aim of killing all of them. They marked the Jews with numbers, dehumanized the Jews, organized mass killings, and made excuses for their actions.
Explain the impact of the Maginot Line on the French defense strategy.
The Magniot line was France’s line of defence against Germany, but it failed to anticipate the German invasion through the Ardeene’s forest, and the reliance on fortifications and static defence was not suited for the German’s war tactics (Blitzkrieg)
How did the US and Canada enter the war?
US → Bombing of Pearl Harbour
Canada → Joined on their own (British CommonWealth), Autonomous nation, special session of parliament voted to join war, declaring war on Germany (September 10, 1939)
In what ways did Canadian women enter the war and why was this significant?
Tracked down boats and missiles, managed radio communications, served in the military, worked on the farm, worked in factories, logging, pumping gas, and driving cars, munition factories to produce war supplies, trained in house defense, and were blue birds. Significant because women were able to play a much bigger role in the working industry compared to even just WWI, and this changed the way society worked, for example, introducing Daycare Centres.
What was Juno Beach used for and why was it significant?
Canada’s landing zone, third division on D-Day. Significant because Canada was able to capture the beach and surrounding villages despite heavy German defenses (bunkers, machine guns, etc). Canada advanced further inland than any other Allied division that day, showing their bravery and skill.
What was the Manhattan Project and what was the outcome of it?
The Manhattan Project was a research program designed to produce the first nuclear weapons in WW2, run by the US. The outcome of this project was two atomic bombs being dropped onto major Japanese cities, causing them to surrender, and ultimately leading to the end of WW2.
