What are the Three Styles of Motivation?
- Intrinsic: movement toward action for the fun and/or enjoyment of the task
- Extrinsic: when action is dependent upon or controlled by external forces (money, trophey, etc)
- Amotivation: when one perceives no relationships between actions and outcome

What are the Three Levels of Listening?
Inefficient or Selective: selectively tune in and out, preparing what to say next, leads to misunderstandings
Minimal: you listen but you don’t hear all the details, little beyond surface meaning, miss the emotions
Active or Reflective: most effective level of listening, focused on content, emotions and feelings, you must acknowledge, respond and give appropriate feedback to what was stated
What are the four factors that impact how you listen
The way you send information (verbal, non-verbal, written, face-to-face, etc.)
The amount of information you send
The content of what you say
The timing of what you say
What are the five barriers to communication
Criticizing: Easily justified as trying to help others improve
Undefined Goals and Expectations: Most assume others already know their expectations
Labeling: Judging and stereotyping
Avoiding others’ Concerns: too busy trying to get our own needs met
Defensiveness: a threat to ones self esteem
What are the three variations of non-verbal communications?
Body Language: posture, gestures and emotion
Spatial Relations: the space between you and others
Paralanguage: pitch, tempo, volume

Forming (Orientation): togetherness; needs directing coaching style
Storming (Dissatisfaction): fighting; needs coaching
Norming (Resoultion): starting to “come together”; needs supporting coaching style
