Short Term Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are the short term impacts of exercise on bones and joints?
The temperature of joints to be increased, so reducing the viscosity of synovial fluid and increasing the ease of joint movement
What are the short term impacts of exercise on bones and joints?
More skeletal muscle fibres to be brought into play - a process known as recruitment
Muscle fibres to begin to contract faster and harder, as a result of increased nerve stimulation
An increased demand by muscles for oxygen and other nutrients
Muscle temperature and pliability to increase
Muscle metabolic enzyme activity to increase
What are the short term impacts of exercise on respiration and the blood?
As the muscle tissue demands more oxygen, the exchange of gases within the lungs must take place faster, resulting in an increase in the rate of respiration
Blood is diverted away from those areas not essential to the exercise being performed, and towards the muscles being worked
Blood vessels dilate (called vasodilation) in the areas being used, and constrict (called vasoconstriction) in those areas not being used
What are the short term cardiovascular impacts of exercise?
The increased rate of circulation results in an increase in systolic blood pressure, but has no significant effect on diastolic pressure
What is DOMS and when does it happen?
Delayed onset muscle soreness, happens after participating in certain physical activities, especially those to which the body is unaccustomed
