Tell me how you’d check the brakes are working before starting a journey
When I press the brake pedal it shouldn’t feel spongy or slack. If there working properly the car shouldn’t pull to one side
How do you check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off. The vehicle should not pull to one side.
Where do you find information for the recommended tyre pressures and how do you check them?
In the manufacturer’s guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold. Don’t forget the spare tyre and to refit valve caps.
How do you check tyres have sufficient tread depth and are safe to use?
No cuts or bulges. 1.6mm of tread across the central ¾ breadth and around the entire outer circumference.
How do you adjust the head restraint for best protection?
It should be at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and close to the back of the head.
How do you check headlights and tail lights are working?
Turn on the switch (with ignition if needed), then walk around the vehicle to check.
How do you know if there’s a problem with the anti-lock braking system?

Open the bonnet and check the level against the high and low markings on the header tank. Only open when engine is cool.

Open the bonnet and check the level is between the minimum and maximum on the brake fluid reservoir.

Operate the rear washer and wiper control.
