Q

Draw Absolute Block?

A

Step 1: Draw Two Signal Boxes

Draw two small boxes on either side of your page labeled:
Signal Box A (left side)
Signal Box B (right side)

Step 2: Add the Track

Draw a single line (representing the track) connecting the two signal boxes.
Label this line “Single Line Track” or “Running Line”.

Step 3: Divide the Track

Divide the track between the two boxes into three sections:

Block Section (between A and B)

Use dashed vertical lines to mark the boundaries.
Label each section clearly.

Step 4: Add Signals

Near each signal box, draw Distan, Home and Section Signals:
At Signal Box A:
Distant, Home Signal (on the approach to the box)
Starting Signal (just before the train enters the Block Section)

At Signal Box B:
Same arrangement as A, but on the other end
Step 5: Indicate the Block Instruments

Draw a small train icon in one of the sections to demonstrate how the system works.
For example, place it in the Block Section, and label it “Train in Section”.

Q

Why would a semaphore distant signal be positioned underneath a stop signal?

A

If there is a distant signal on the same post as a stop signal:

  • the stop signal is worked by the signal box at that location and the
  • distant signal is worked by the signal box ahead

And it’s usually done when there isn’t enough distance between the stop and distant

Q

What does the term Intermediate Block mean?

A

IB creates extra section within absolute block allowing more trains on the line.

A section of track within a larger absolute block section where another train can be admitted, provided it’s clear of trains in the preceding section and the intermediate block itself.

11
Q

What type of signal would you find in Intermediate Block?

A

In an intermediate block section, you would find intermediate block home signals and their associated distant signals.
These signals are typically color light signals

12
Q

Can the distant signal be pulled off before the home and section signal?

A

No, the distant signal cannot be pulled off before the home and section signals.
The distant signal is designed to be “pulled off” only when the home and starting signals are also cleared, indicating a clear path for the train to proceed.

13
Q

What is a Fixed Distant signal and where would you find it?

A

It is a distant signal that permanently displays a caution aspect, meaning it always shows a “caution” signal to drivers.

You might find Fixed Distant signals at the end of a single line, or at the approach to a terminal where the next signal is always at danger

Q

What letters could you find on a subsidiary signal?

A

On subsidiary signals, you might find the letters C, S, or W.
These letters indicate different types of subsidiary signals:
“C” for Calling-on,
“S” for Shunt-ahead, and
“W” for Warning.

Q

How do you read semaphore junction indicators?

A

The highest one indicates the route/line.

Semaphore junction indicators are supplementary signals used in semaphore signalling systems to indicate when a train is being routed to a side track, rather than the straight track

Q

What is an IBJ?

A

Insulated block joint - used to detect the presence of trains on a section of track. By electrically isolating sections of track, track circuits can accurately determine if a section is occupied. Thus changing the signal.

What sign is under a semi automatic signal?

A

A white box with a horizontal black line with semi written above the line

22
Q

What sign signifies the Intermediate Block home signal?

A

A white box with a vertical black line running through it

23
Q

What does a white triangle mean on a signal?

A

It’s a distant signal

24
Q

What is a ground position light?

A

A signal used to control shunting movements, typically near points and sidings

25
What does two red horizontal lights on a ground position light mean?
Limit of shunt - stop
26
What is the minimum amount of lunar lights that should be lit on a junction indicator?
3
27
Draw the three limit of shunt signals
A bot with shunt limit, a circle with limit of shunt and a triangle box with two red lights
28
What is a limit of shunt signal?
marks the furthest point a train or shunting movement is permitted to go before becoming a SPAD
29
Why would yellow lights be flashing?
Facing points at a junction ahead are set for a diverging route with a lower speed than that for the straight route
30
Where would you find a route indicator?
Typically at junctions where they’ll indicate what route the driver will be taking.
31
Draw a miniature route indicator.
32
What is an OFF indicator?
Indicates the train is ready to pull off
33
What is a banner repeater?
a type of railway signal that provides drivers with advance notification of the aspect of a main signal ahead, especially in areas where the main signal is obscured
34
What is a co-acting signal?
A duplicate signal installed at the same location as a main signal
35
What is a SPAD indicator?
A sign placed at high risk location where if a spad was to occur a collision would be very likely
36
What is a single line?
Where there is only one track and trains travel in both directions
37
What is the principle of single line?
One train on the single line section at any one time
38
What five reasons could a train enter a single line without a token?
Modified working is in operation Assisting a train Pilot is in operation Engineering possession Shunting purposes
39
What is a PILOT?
Person in lieu of token
40
What is a signal irregularity?
Where a signal is not displaying information correctly - I.e. signal reversion
41
What are the three types of dispatch?
Staff Self Right away/green flag
42
Write out the dispatch procedure for self dispatch
1. Be prepared at Local door 2. When Piatform in view dks on 3. wait For kickback / jolt 4. Open Local Door And Step onto platform (with BOTH feet.) 5. Check platform train interface + ensure train is fully Accomodated - ALL DOORS 6. Step back on train + release doors 7. Step back a Platform (BOTH Feet) and watch passengers Boarding and alighting 8. 2 mins Before Departure, press ‘TRTS’ Button 9. 30 secs before -check the Signal and Time ensurePTI is clear - Step on train STATION WORK COMPLETE 10. Step back onto platform (both feet) and check dispatch corridoor - Hazard Lights OFF - Doors crosed - NObody / Nothing trapped, 11. Check signal and time 12. Step Back on train close local door. 13. 2 on Bell Buzzer 14. Stay at Local Door until end of platform Is clear including dissused parts * NOT ALL STATIONS * HOLD FOR 5 sec. + Train Safety chECK

Write out the dispatch procedure for staff dispatch
Step back a Platform (BOTH Feet) and watch passengers Boarding and alighting 8. 2 mins Before Departure, dispatcher presses ‘TRTS’ Button 9. 30 secs before the dispatcher will give station work completed signal (usually a white baton raised above head) 10. Acknowledge the signaller with a hand raised above head only if you have a proceed aspect, then close doors 11. Step back onto the platform observed doors closed and ensure the external orange hazard lights extinguish check those are fully closed and nobody is trapped in them or leaning on the train. 12. You and the dispatcher check that there is still a proceed aspect correct route indication and then carry out the train safety check. 13. 10 seconds before departure the dispatcher gives the train seat to check complete signal which is a white bat on raised above their head. 14. Check you’re still have a pro proceed aspect and then acknowledge dispatcher by raising one on above your head. 15. Step onto the train enclosure local door. 16. Once your door is fully closed, give The ready to start signal to the driver. 17. The driver acknowledges by repeating back to start signal. 18. Stay by your local door saving the platform for any unsafe activity. 19. One should clear the platform the energise DKS and secure the panel.
44
What are the two correct names for tip 1 and tip 2 on staff dispatch?
45
Where can you dispatch your train from?
Middle or back
46
What are the bell buzzer codes?
1 - stop 1-2 - close power operated doors 2 - train ready to start 2-2 - do not open train doors (driver and guard to speak) 3 - set back 3-2-1 - testing doors (driver doesn't repeat back) 3-3 - driver and guard speak to each other (cab-to-cab) 4 - slow down 6 - draw forward 9 - police assistance required
47
What happens if the bell buzzer is defective?
You will tell the driver and come to an agreement on how you’ll dispatch the train Either a green flag or green light in poor visibility On older fleets you will also agree to cab-to-cab the driver to let them know to start the train
48
What does PTI stand for?
Platform train interface
49
What situations would allow the doors to close without the dispatch procedure?
50
What is exchanged on a single line?
A token - this could be a staff
