simple invertebrate Flashcards
(22 cards)
Porifera
which is composed of three distinct groups, the Hexactinellida (glass sponges), the Demospongia, and the Calcarea (calcareous sponges).
. Cnidaria
a phylum containing over 10,000 species of animals found exclusively in aquatic environments their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey.
Annelida
a group commonly referred to as segmented worms, and they are found worldwide from the deepest marine sediments to the soils in our city parks and yards.
Hydroid
pertaining to the hydroidea.
. Jellyfish
medusa-phase of certain gelatinous members of the subphylum Medusozoa, a major part of the phylum Cnidaria.
Platyhelminthes
are a phylum of relatively simple bilaterian, unsegmented, soft-bodied invertebrates.
Nematoda
are bilaterally symmetrical, worm-like organisms that are surrounded by a strong, flexible noncellular layer called a cuticle. Their body plan is simple.
. Pinworms
is a parasitic worm.
Tapeworms
Cestoda is a class of parasitic worms in the flatworm phylum.
. Bivalves
an aquatic mollusk that has a compressed body enclosed within a hinged shell, such as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops.
Gastropods
a mollusk of the large class Gastropoda, such as a snail, slug, or whelk.
Coelomate
have a body cavity called a coelom with a complete lining called peritoneum derived from mesoderm
Acoelomate
an invertebrate lacking a coelom
Radial Symmetry
symmetry around a central axis, as in a starfish or a tulip flower.
Asymmetry
lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry.
Bilateral Symmetry
the property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane.
Tentacle
a slender flexible limb or appendage in an animal, especially around the mouth of an invertebrate, used for grasping, moving about, or bearing sense organs.
Cnidocyte
is an explosive cell containing one giant secretory organelle or cnida (plural cnidae) that defines the phylum Cnidari
Ectoderm
the outermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the epidermis and nerve tissue.
. Endoderm
the innermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the lining of the gut and associated structures.
Ovary
a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced, present in humans and other vertebrates as a pair.
Teste
the primary male reproductive organs.
