Singapore Water Security Flashcards
(7 cards)
Desalination
4 desalination plants, increase security as Singapore have guaranteed access to salt water
However, very expensive and high energy demand, so bad for climate change
Imported Water
Built water treatment works next to Johor River (Malaysia)
Malaysia benefits by buying back 2% water once purified
NEWater
Wastewater from industry + homes is purified
However, not used domestically as citizens don’t like the idea of ‘waste’ water despite it being potable
Catchment Water
Built 17 reservoirs to catch precipitation as Singapore has little lakes/ aquifers
What are they an example of?
All adaptation strategies
Evaluate
Shows able to achieve security despite not having many natural reserves e.g. aquifers and lakes
However, only feesable for high income countries as desalination/ the infrastructure projects are extremely high cost
Water Conservation
Low capacity flushing systems to reduce domestic water waste
