’ love your neighbour as thyself ‘( Luke 10:27)

18

A

Jesus said to ‘ love your enemies ‘ this promotes unconditional love towards people no matter who they are

Q

Fletcher underestimates the actual freedom of humans to make moral decisions purely based on love as surely other factors like upbringing etc. effect ones ability to make decisions. Christians may need rules to help them make moral loving decisions

If a man is a good man ‘ one does not ask what he believed or what he hopes , but what he loves ‘

Fletcher was inspired by a St. Louis taxi driver who said

A

’ sometimes you’ve Gotta put your principles to one side and do the right thing’

Q

Fletcher claimed that situationalists should be

A

’ fully armed with the ethical maxims of his community’ and was careful to note that laws should only be followed ‘ if love seems better served by doing so ‘

24
Q

Barclay criticism

A

‘If all men were saints , then situation ethics would be the perfect ethics… But man has not yet come of age. Man , therefore still need the crutch and protection of the law.’

25
Edwin Williams
' love is too ambiguous for solving moral problems '- it doesn't tell us what we really ought to do.
26
Pope pius
Argues that individuals needs shouldn't be taken into account as much as it can at times go against the church's teaching
27
Dunstan
Argues that the theory is legalistic so is contradicting itself entirely
28
Tillich
"The law of love is the ultimate law" - legalistic laws are not as important as the law of love. " the absolution off love is its power to go into the concrete situation " - you can go into any situation fully equipped with the principle of love
29
Bulttmann
Jesus had no ethics apart from ' love thy neighbour as thyself '
30
