A

chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder

characterised by diminished lacrimal and salivary gland secretion

primary form is not associated with any other disease, but secondary for is associated with another underlying rheumatic disease

MADFRED

Myalgia
Arthralgia 
Dry mouth
Fatigue
Raynauds Phenomenon 
Enlarged Parotid

what investigations can be done into Sjogrens syndrome?

A
  • Anti Ro and Anti La antibodies
  • RF and anti ds- DNA antibodies
  • Schirmers test measures tear volume
  • salivary gland biopsy may be needed

how is Sjogrens treated?

A

Essentially symptomatic

Avoid dry or smoky atmospheres

Dry eyes–artificial tears

Dry mouth -artificial saliva, sugar free gum/pastilles

Skin emollients, vaginal lubricants

Immunosuppressants/steroids rarely needed
