Skeletal Muscle Easy Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the neuromuscular junction?
A meeting place between a motor neuron and a muscle fiber.
What is the role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
It stores calcium ions.
What are T-tubules?
They are extensions of the sarcolemma that help electrical impulses reach the muscle cell’s interior.
What neurotransmitter is released at the neuromuscular junction?
Acetylcholine (ACh).
What happens when ACh binds to the sarcolemma
An action potential is generated in the muscle fiber membrane.
What triggers the release of calcium ions in the muscle cell?
The action potential traveling down the T-tubules.
What is ATP’s role in muscle contraction?
It energizes the myosin heads for the power stroke and detaches cross-bridges.
