Skeletal System Flashcards
Tissue
A group of cells working together to do the same job
Organs
A group of tissues working together to do the same jobs
Organ system
A group of organs working together to do the same job
Joint
A point where two or more bones meet allowing for movement and flexibility
Cartilage
Strong, flexible connective tissues that is used to connect joints
Tendon
A fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Ligament
Connective tissue that connects bone to bone
The job of the skeletal system is to
Support, protect, move, factory, and storage
Support
keeps the body upright and prevents it from collapsing
Protection
Shields soft organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs
Movement
allows movement by working together with the muscles
Factory
forms red blood cells, specifically in the bones red marrow
Storage
homeostasis stores and releases calcium into the blood to maintain a stable environment in the body
Tips to keeping your bones strong
Vitamin D, enough calcium, avoid soda, exercise
Fixed Joint
This is where the bone fits together but do not move Example: Skull
Ball and Socket joint
This is where the shaped end of one bone (ball) fits into the cup (Socket)of another bone. It allows for movement in all directions Example: Shoulder and hip
Hinge Joint
Permits back and fourth movement
Example: Knee and elbow
Pivot Joint
Allows for rotation movements as well as twisting
Example: Neck
Gliding Joint
Allows for sliding and twisting movement.
Example: Wrist and Ankle
