Q

What are the functions of the skeletal system?

A
  1. Support
  2. Protection of internal organs (cranial bones protect the brain, ribcage protects heart and lungs, vertebrae protects spinal cord)
  3. Movement
  4. Storage of calcium and phosphate (minerals that give hardness to bones)
  5. Production of blood cells (red bone marrow)
  6. Storage of lipids (yellow bone marrow)

16
Q

What do osteoclasts do?

A

line the inside surface of bone

17
Q

What are all bones made of? (2)

A
  1. compact bone (hard stuff)

2. spongy bone (inside the bone)

18
Q

What is the basic structural unit for compact bone?

19
Q

What is the osteon?

A

long, cylindrical structure

20
Q

What is the concentric lamellae?

A

rings of hardened matrix form around the central canal

21
Q

What is the central canal?

A

contains blood vessels, a lymphatic vessel and a nerve
