Skeletal system Flashcards
part 1 (21 cards)
What does the skeletal system include?
Bones of the skeleton, and cartilage, ligaments, and other stabilizing connective tissue
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
- Support
- Protection of internal organs (cranial bones protect the brain, ribcage protects heart and lungs, vertebrae protects spinal cord)
- Movement
- Storage of calcium and phosphate (minerals that give hardness to bones)
- Production of blood cells (red bone marrow)
- Storage of lipids (yellow bone marrow)
What is ground substance?
wet stuff that fills the spaces between cells and surrounds collagen fibres.
What do collagen fibres provide to the bone?
strength to the bone. they are strong and flexible, but not elastic
What are osteoblasts and what do they absorb?
Forms bone extracellular matrix and absorb calcium and phosphate
What are osteocyte?
maintain bone tissue
What are osteoclast?
functions in resorption, the breakdown of bone matrix
Before calcium is deposited what is the bone matrix called?
osteoid
What do osteoblasts manufacture?
protein (collagen)
What do osteoblasts secrete?
bone matrix
What do osteoblasts become when they are surrounded by bone?
osteocytes
What is an immature, bone-building cell?
osteoblasts
Where is the osteocyte found?
In lacunae between layers of bone matrix
What are the functions of osteocyte?
- Maintain the bone matrix
2. repair damaged bone
What gets stimulated when a bone gets stressed?
osteocytes
What do osteoclasts do?
line the inside surface of bone
What are all bones made of? (2)
- compact bone (hard stuff)
2. spongy bone (inside the bone)
What is the basic structural unit for compact bone?
osteon
What is the osteon?
long, cylindrical structure
What is the concentric lamellae?
rings of hardened matrix form around the central canal
What is the central canal?
contains blood vessels, a lymphatic vessel and a nerve
