Skeletal System Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does ‘123’/’FLE’ stand for?
1 - F, when the fulcrum is in the middle
2 - L, when the load is in the middle
3 - E when the effort is in the middle
Give an example of a 1st class lever
Nodding the head
Identify the 4 functions of the skeleton
- shape and support
- protect vital organs
- allows movement
- produces red blood cells
What is the purpose/benefit of shape and support in the skeletal system?
It creates a frame which muscles attach to so that our organs can sit
What is the benefit of protecting our vital organs?
Internal organs are soft and vulnerable so the skeleton protects them from being damaged
How do the skeleton and muscle systems work together to aid movement?
The skeleton is attached to the muscles so that when muscles contracts they pull on the bones, enabling the joint to move
Where are our red blood cells created
in the bone marrow
Give an example of an irregular bone
Vertebrae/Pelvis
Name the three bones in the foot?
Phalanges, Metatarsals, Tarsals
Why is it important that the cranium is a fixed joint?
Very strong shock absorber, held together by tough fibre to protect the brain.
Where is the ulna located?
Lower arm
Flexion occurs when…
the angle of the joint is getting smaller
Adduction occurs when…
The movement is adding to the body (moving towards the mid-line)
What is the purpose of synovial fluid?
acts as a lubricant to reduce friction
