what is a political map?
a political map is a map that represents political divisions, or human-created boundaries of the world, continents and landform boundaries
what are political features?
characteristics such as borders, roads, population centers and landform boundaries
what are physical maps?
a physical map replicates the physical features of a terrain displayed on the map
why do we have physical maps?
they are designed so that the natural landscape features of Earth are apparent.
what are physical map charcteristics?
physical maps use different colours on heights to clearly show the topography of the area
what does topography mean?
the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area
what does terrain mean?
a large stretch of land
what is absolute location?
absolute location refers to the exact geographical coordinates of a place, usually measured in latitude and longitude
what is relative location?
relative location is the position of a place based on its location with respect to other locations.
what does BOLTSS stand for?
Border- the outline or frame surrounding the map
Orientation- shows the location of north
Legend- (key) tells the person reading the map what all the symbols on the map mean
Title- explains the purpose of the map/ what it’s showing
Scales- tells us how much smaller the map is than the actual area described
Source- where the information used to make the map came from
what are eastings?
vertical lines that run from the top to the bottom
what are northings?
horizontal lines that run from east to west
how many digits do area references have?
