25
Superior orbital fissure
26
Foramen rotundum
27
Foramen ovale
28
Fontanelles of the skull
CT gaps or soft spots (needed for birth) Anterior = junction of sagittal and coronal sutures, closses ~18 months of age, later called BREGMA Posterior = junction of lamboidal and sagittal sutures, closes ~3 months of age, later called LAMBDA
29
Wormian bones
Tiny bones of the skull encased totally by sutures
30
Sutures of the skull
Sagittal = top of skull, interparietal Coronal = btwn frontal + 2 parietal bones Lamboidal = btwn occiptal + 2 parietal bones Squamosal = btwn temporal and parietal bones
31
Lambda
Junction of sagittal and lambodial sutures where ligamentum nuchae attaches BACK OF HEAD
32
Bregma
jcn of sagittal and coronal sutures TOP OF HEAD
33
Pterion
Jcn of coronal suture, squamosal suture, and greater wing of sphenoid WEAK POINT over middle meningeal artery, danger area
34
And what is in each
Blue = ANTERIOR cranial fossa - Anterior of cranium to lesser wings of sphenoid - Front lobes of brain rest here, cribiform plate, anterior ethmoidal foramen, posterior ethmoidal foramen, foramina or cribiform plate Red = MIDDLE cranial fossa - "step down from anterior cranial fossa" - **formed by sphenoid and temporal bone** - contains anterior aspect of temporal lobes and MANY FORAMNIA - optic canal, hypophyseal fossa, superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, foramen spinosum Green = POSTERIOR cranial fossa - "step down from middle cranial fossa" - **occipital bone, temporal bone, parietal + sphenoid** - impressions from sinuses, confluence of sinuses, + cerebellum - foramen magum, internal acoustic meatus, jugular foramen, hypoglossal canal, condyloid canal
35
What goes through foramen magum
Medulla, meninges, vertebral aa., spinal branch of CN XI
36
What goes through internal acoustic meatus?
CN VII CN VIII labyrinthine a.
37
Contents of jugular foramen
CN IX, CN X, CN XI inferior petrosal sinus sigmoid sinus posterior meningeal artery
38
Lesser wing of Sphenoid bone
39
Greater wing of Sphenoid bone
40
Posterior clinoid process
41
Anterior clinoid process
42
Cribiform plate (part of Ethmoid plate)
43
Superior orbital fissure
44
Sella Turcica (\*\*pituitary gland sits here)
45
Foramen rotundum
46
Optic canal
47
Draw the sutures and landmarks of skull
48
Neurocranial bones Viscerocranium bones
**Neurocranium** Parietal (2) Occipital Temporal (2) Frontal Sphenoid Ethmoid **Viscerocranium** Zygomatic (2) Lacrimal Nasal (2) Maxilla (2) Mandible (2) Palatine (2) Inferior nasal conchae (2)
49
Ethmoid bone
Crista galli - for attachment of falx cerebi, it is the peak with the cribiform plate running on both sides Cribiform plate Anterior, middle, and posterior ethmoidal air cells Superior and middle conchae
50
green - Optical canal red - Superior Orbital Fissure orange - Foramen Rotundum blue - foramen Ovale black - Internal acoustic meatus purple - Foramen spinosum yellow - jugular foramen
51
red - Cribiform plate black - Cristi galli (houses falx cerebri) purple - Internal acoustic meatus blue - Jugular foramen green - Hypoglossal canal orange - Foramen Magum
52
green - Zygomatic bone yellow - Greater wing of Sphenoid red - Zygomatic arch black - External acoustic meatus blue - Pterion purple - External occipital protruberance orange - Mastoid process
53
What four bones connect here and why is it clinically important?
\*PTERION\* Frontal, greater wing of Sphenoid, temporal, and partietal bone join middle meningeal artery lies underneath
54
Vomer bone
55
red - Incisive fossa or foramen orange - Greater palatine foramen yellow - Foramen Ovale green - foramen Spinosum blue - foramen Lacerum purple - Carotid canal black - jugular fossa
56
red - Greater palatine foramen yellow - lesser palatine foramen orange - Pteryoid hamulus green - Mastoid process
57
red - Choana blue - Inferior orbital fissure yellow - Foramen Ovale green - Foramen Spinosum purple - Condylar canal
58
What attaches to styloid process of temporal bone?
stylohyoid (VII) Styloglossus (XII) stylopharyngeus (IX)
59
What is the sagittal sulcus?
Seen from the inferior view of the skull - this is where the superior sagittal sinus runs You can have cranial stenosis if you are born with this closed
60
What runs through optic canal
Optic n. (CN II) Opthalmic a.
61
What runs through the mental foramen?
Mental n. (branch off of inferior alveolar n., branch of mandibular n./V3) Mental a. and v. too
62
Where is the pituitary gland housed?
Within the hypophyseal fossa, which is in the sella turcica (in the Sphenoid bone) ...in the middle cranial fossa
