Q

Write 1 P.E.E paragraph about if you believe Emily Davison was a suffragette Martyr

A

I disagree to a certain extent that Emily Davison was a suffragette martyr. Evidence to support my point is that she was at the suffragette festival and promised that she would come every day except the next day ( which was derby day) . This shows that she didn’t mean to kill herself as she intended to go back to the week long suffragette festival after the derby . Another evidence is a police report of what was found in Emily Davison’s body. She had 1 return railway ticket which shows that she didn’t plan to die that day and she intended to return back. As well as one of her friends said that Emily wouldn’t have died without sending a farewell message to her mom. Therefore I disagree to a certain extent that Emily Davison was a suffragette martyr.

Q

How far do you agree with the statement that world war 1 was the main reason women gained the vote. Write 2 P.E.E paragraphs with the conclusion

A

I agree to a certain extent that WW1 was the main reason Women gained the Vote because a diary extract from 1917 by a western front says the following: “ I wonder if we have been wrong to deny them equality all these years? From What I have seen they are as strong and
determined as any man.’ This quote from the diary shows how guilty he feels by underestimating women and their capabilities and work ethic. This shows that the war showed men that women can do their jobs to the same level and how they made a huge impact in WW1 and how they deserve the right to vote as men do. Another evidence to support my statement is the increase in women doing jobs pre-war and post-war. For example: Transportation worker pre-war was: 18,200 and post -war it was 117,200, Agriculture workers pre-war was 190,00 and post-war was 228,000 and many more jobs. The increase showed the prime minister ( Herbert Asquith) that women should get some sort of suffrage. This is from a speech he said in 1917 “However, for three years now the Suffragettes have not started that horrible campaign of violence. Not only that, they have contributed to every service during this war except that of fighting. therefore believe that some kind of women’s suffrage should be given.

However, I disagree with this statement to a certain extent because I believe that WW1 acted as a catalyst to help women gain the vote however the main reason was the suffragists and suffragettes movement. The women’s suffrage movement started 1897, long before WW1. Both non-violent ( such as peaceful protest) and violent which came in 1903 ( burning down churches and attacking members of the parliament) was what made men witness how infuriated women were and the inequality that was happening. As well as Emily Davison which played a huge role in the suffragette movement. She was a suffragette who made a huge headline when she sacrificed her life for the sake of women’s suffrage in 1913( 1 year before WW1). It was estimated that 20,000 people attended her funeral which was a huge step forward in gaining the right to vote. Therefore, I believe to a certain extent that WW1 only acted as a catalyst however it wasn’t the main reason women gained the vote.

In conclusion, I believe that WW1 was the main reason women gained the vote as it showed men and members of the parliament that WW1 wouldn’t have been a victory for them without the help of women as they worked on farms to make crops, nurses, munition workers and much more. However I also believe that the suffragette/suffragist movement definitely made an impact however not as much as WW1.
