Appearing terrified, talking nonsense, walking around
What is insomnia?
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
How much sleep should a person get?
- Depending on their age
- Newborns often sleep two-thirds of their day
- Adults often sleep no more than one-third

Light and melatonin role of sleep
- The light sets off an internal alarm
- activates proteins; signals a brain structure called suprachiasmatic nucleus
- The brain structure decreases the production of sleep-suppporting-hormone (melatonin)
effects of sleep loss
- predicts depression
- risk for depressed immune system

contribute to obesity, high blood pressure, and memory impairment

- altered state of consciousness through social interaction
- may cause dissociation

- concentration or mindfulness

- biological clock
