Sleep Flashcards
(12 cards)
What structure in the hypothalamus is involved in your circadian rhythm?
the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
What EEG waves are associated with the waking state?
Beta waves (14–30 Hz).
What EEG waves are seen during relaxed, eyes-closed states?
Alpha waves (8–14 Hz).
What type of EEG activity is associated with drowsiness?
Theta waves (4–7 Hz).
What are sleep spindles and when do they occur?
Brief bursts of brain activity (11–16 Hz) that occur during light sleep (Stage 2).
What EEG waves are associated with deep or ‘slow wave’ sleep?
Delta waves (0.1–4 Hz).
When does REM sleep typically begin?
About 90 minutes after falling asleep.
What do EEG patterns during REM sleep resemble?
Beta waves—similar to the waking state.
What is atonia in REM sleep?
Complete muscle paralysis, except for eye movements.
Four theories of sleeping
- Sleep as restoration
- Sleep as survival advantage
- Sleep to simulate rare situations
- Sleep plays a role in information
processing
Who did the study on sleep deprivation?
Gardner (awake for 11 days)
Name sleep disorders
Narcolepsy (uncontrollable falling asleep)
Insomnia (fatal)
Sleep paralysis (Atonia straight away)
