Stages of sleep
CYCLE (from top to bottom then back to top) every 90mins Stage 1 2 (50% total sleep) 3 4 REM (20% total sleep)
Which regions stimulate slow waves
Gaba neurones in preoptoc area of hypiothalamus
Serotonin from raphe nuclei
Stage 1
Eyes make rolling movements
Lightest stage

20-40 mins
From stage 4…

As night proceeds there is a decrease in stages3 and 4 and increase in REM
Ascending reticular activation system
The arousal system
Secretes NE, serotonin during wake phase
Decreased activity during sleep
Ne and serotonin are inhibited in rem sleep
Cause of rem sleep
Inc ach secretion by reticular formation
