what is narcolepsy and how is it treated?
a disorder where a person uncontrollably falls asleep; treated with dopamine-enhancing drugs.
what is cataplexy?
sudden muscle paralysis (like REM sleep) triggered by strong emotion while awake.
what gene is associated with narcolepsy in dogs?
a mutation in the hypocretin (orexin) receptor.
what role does hypocretin play in sleep regulation?
it prevents direct transitions from wakefulness into REM sleep.
what happens in people with narcolepsy regarding hypocretin neurons?
they lose about 90% of them.
what is sleep paralysis?
experiencing atonia and dreaming while awake, usually when falling asleep or waking up.
what is sleep apnea?
a disorder where breathing stops during sleep, requiring the person to wake up to resume breathing
what is seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?
a form of depression caused by low sunlight exposure in winter disrupting circadian rhythms.
