Sport Psychology
Helping athletes consistently perform in the upper range of their capabilities and more thoroughly enjoy the sport performance process.
Arousal

Anxiety

Stress
Threat perceived and responds with a series of physiological and psychological changes

Use facts, reasons, and rational thinking to refute negative thoughts.
Negative self talk: reframing
Changing athletes perspective by interpreting the situation differently.
Moto imagery the PETTLEP method
7 point checklist followed when devising an imagery intervention.
P: physical, E: Environment, T: task, L: Learning, E: emotion, P: Perspective
PETTLEP Tips
P: Physical
Same clothes or same replication
PETTLEP Tips
E: Environment
Same location or close replication
PETTLEP Tips
T: Task
Same task as being performed
PETTLEP Tips
T: Timing
Take the same length of time as it would take
PETTLEP Tips
L: Learning
Adjust as athlete becomes more proficient at task.
PETTLEP Tips
E: Emotion
Incorporate same thoughts/feelings as much as possible
PETTLEP Tips
P: Perspective
As much as possible use internal vs external imagery
Mental imagery study tells:
Second person self talk enhances public speaking performance, reduce stress. But when running they are unclear if first person or second person is better.
Mental imagery
Using senses to recreate or create an expert in the mind
Internal imagery
Athletes visualize themselves doing the task
External imagery
Athlete visualize themselves from a third person perspective.
What happens in high arousal
Exited, angry, or anxious
What happens in low arousal
Bored, relaxed, asleep
