SLR2- 1.1: Types of processor- The differences between and uses of CISC and RISC processors Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an instruction set?
An instruction set is a set of all instructions written in machine code that can be recognised and executed by a given processing unit/CPU
What does CISC stand for?
Complex Instruction Set Computer
What does RISC stand for?
Reduced Instruction Set Computer
What does a CISC processor consist of?
A larger instruction set that includes more complex instructions
What are the key features of CISC processor?
- More complex instructions = More than one clock cycle to execute
- Has more general purpose registers
- Instructions take up less space in memory
Where are CISC processors used?
Used in laptops and desktop computers
What does a RISC processors consist of?
A smaller instruction set with more simple instructions
What are the key features of RISC processor?
- One instruction= One clock cycle to execute
- Compilers are more complicated so will generate more instructions
- Has fewer addressing modes
Which type of processor is more suitable for pipelining?
RISC
Where are RISC processors used?
Used in smartphones and tablets
