What is Tularemia?

A

A serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. A Gram-negative, nonmotile coccobacillus, the bacterium has several subspecies with varying degrees of virulence. The most important of those is F. tularensis tularensis (Type A), which is found in lagomorphs (rabbits and similar animals) in NA & hares/rodents in europe

Rare systemic illness caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis
• Case fatality rate of 7-10% in untreated humans
Abrupt onset fever, myalgia, vomiting, headache, and rash 2-10 days post exposure
