(7 cards)
What is the definition of chronic bronchitis?
cough and sputum brought up most days for at least 3 months
What is the anatomical definition of emphysema?
abnormal and permanent dilation of the airspace distal to the terminal bronchioles with destruction of their walls
What is the pathology of chronic bronchitis?
hypertrophy of submucosal glands
increased number of goblet cells
mucocillary dysfunction

What is the pathophysiology of emphysema?
degraded elastin leading to hyperinflation of alveoli, loss of lung elasticity, destruction of alveolar walls
COPD can be described as multi-component. What are these three components?
inflammation
tissue damage
mucocillary dysfunction

What is a possible genetic cause of emphysema?
alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
the main function of this protein is to keep white blood cells from damaging normal tissue, without this protein white blood cells continously damage lung tissue
What will the spirometry trace
