Q

Clot Blood

A

Blood contains platelets which help clots our blood and form scabs which help stop bleeding and healing. In some sports small are common and so this is important.

Q

Controls the body’s temperature

A

If you get too hot the blood vessels close to the skin get bigger (vasodilation). Blood is diverted to the surface to allow more heat to radiate out. If you become too cold your vessels get smaller (vasoconstriction) to avoid heat being lost.

Q

Vascular shunting

A

Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction.

Q

Adrenaline

A

To bring about a change in your heart rate, your body releases a hormone called adrenaline. It makes the heart beat faster and diverts blood away from the organs and to the muscles (vascular shunting).

Q

What do Arteries have

A

Thick walls and are more elastic than veins as they carry
blood which is at a higher pressure than veins as they carry oxygenated
blood

16
Q

What is a special type of artery

A

The pulmonary artery is different from other arteries as it carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs

17
Q

Function of Veins

A

They carry blood into the heart

18
Q

What do veins have

A

They have much thinner walls, are less elastic and carry blood at a lower
pressure
