SOC Electrical Flashcards
(31 cards)
What % of on the job fatalities are from electrocution?
5%
What materials are insulators from electrocution?
Glass, rubber, dry wood, clay, plastic
What materials are conductors of electricity?
metal, water, the earth, humans
What three factors resulted in the majority of electrical accidents?
unsafe work practices, unsafe equipment or installation and unsafe environment
What is “guarding”?
enclosing electrical equipment so it won’t accidentally come into contact with live parts.
*Anything 50v or more must be accessible only to authorized personnel
What is “grounding”?
creating a low resistance path that connects to the earth.
What are “circuit protection devices”?
they limit or stop the flow of current automatically, in the event of a ground fault, overload, or short circuit in the system.
Convert Watts to Volts
Voltage = Watts ÷ amps
E=P÷I
convert Watts to amps
AMPS = Watts ÷ Voltage
I=P÷E
convert amps to watts
Watts = voltage x amps
P=E x I
Convert horsepower to amps
HP = (B × A × EFF) ÷750
efficiency = (750xHP)÷(VxA)
What is the equivalent of horsepower to watts
1 HP= 750 watts
What will all power go through before dispersion into the house?
Main panel box
how many amps can a main panel box be?
100 150 or 200
What are 3 major safety rules?
Insulate yourself to prevent shocks
work on one side of a circuit at a time
stay 10ft away from high tension wires
What frequency is considered to be more dangerous?
low frequencies (60hz) because they suck you in
What is a DC current?
direct current. (batteries)
What is AC current?
alternating current. it’s generated through hydro, wind, generator etc
define hertz
the number of times per second that a current will go plus to minus and back to plus per second
define Power
at a plant electricity is charged (multiplied) and given voltage (“pressure”)
define amps
current flow of electrons through wire. Delivered as either heat or light
define watts
the rate energy is consumed at a point (toaster, light bulb etc)
define resistance
how much current flows through a component, measured in ohms. (high resistance = lower flow)
what color is a bonding screw?
green
