Unwarranted and generalized characteristics given to a group as a whole
Discrimination
Act upon prejudice and stereotypes by treating people in a unfavorable way

Process in which some identifies and interprets symptoms
Illness behavior model
People will seek medical help under four conditions
What are the Four conditions of the illness behavior model?
- It is severe
-Persisent and affects daily life
-no alternative explanation for their pain - support system agrees and encourages
- No barriers to receiving for care

Ways of preventing and treating illnesses not medically
Stigma
Personal attributes that are discredited or not accepted by society
Medical Model of Illness
Scientific: Objective, nonnormal, apolitical, biological
Sociological Model of Illness
Critical: Subjective, Moral, Political
Social Control Agents
Leaders/figures who maintain societal normals and have some level of power
Medicalization
Symptoms, moods and behaviors receive a diagnosis and are determined to need medical intervention
Genetization
Increasing trend to medicalize the difference in human genes
Functionalism
How a society runs it ability to perform necessary and desired tasks
Sick Role
How we view ill people and how we think they should live
Health Social Movements
Groups of people who are fighting change in a matter they believe is wrong
Social Stress theory
People of lower class have higher rates of mental illness because of the stress their class status causes them
Social Capital
The networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society (Resources)
Medical Model of Mental Illness
- Objectively measurable conditions defines mental illness
- Stems from psychology or biology
- Will worsen if untreated but will lessen if treated quickly
- Treating mental illness rarely harms patients
