6 Theories of Paraphilia
1. Biological Factors - may run in families - differences in brain structures 2. Learning processes - conditioning: modification of behavior by learning thru association and/or reinforcement 3. courtship disorders - normal courtship behavior is a 4-stage process - stage 1 of normal behavior = location and evaluation 4. may represent a sexual escape route - some people may become paraphiliacs due to blockage of normal avenues of sexual expression - not a conclusive theory 5. cycle of abuse - cycle in which abused children grow up to repeat similar forms of abuse on others 6. Influence of other traits - Hypersexuality: excess of sexual desire that shows itself in compulsive masturbation and the devotion of a great deal of time to sexual fantasy, pornography use, and the pursuit of sex partners - OCD, ADHD, etc.
33
potential treatments for paraphilia
1. behavioral treatments - aversion therapy: eliminate unwanted desires by associating them w/ something that was previously experienced as attractive - masturbatory reconditioning: changing sexual attraction by switching fantasy as soon as orgasm is approaching *does not rely on aversion therapy, less likely to instill guilt 2. psychological treatments - cognitive therapy: attempts to correct paraphiliac's way of thinking; removes blockages to normal sexual expression (work on building social skills) - relapse prevention theory: learning to cope with situations (Practical training, like avoiding locations that offer temptations to offend and committing to jobs or hobbies) - good lives model: collection of skills and knowledge that enable him to attain “primary human goods” (life, health, knowledge, excellence in work/play, autonomy, etc.) - COSA (circles of support and accountability) 3. drug treatments - drugs used to decrease sexual desires - SSRIs (antidepressants) - used to decrease sexual behavior 4.
