Q

Fumes

A

Peter Chang worked on ‘Bracelet 2004’ for just under a year. Making the bracelet was difficult and dangerous work because of the fumes and dust from the glues which he used. There are many layers to the bracelet, which have been filed down and coated in resin. Due to the dangerous work of the bracelet, Chang only made one, which adds to its high price point.

Q

Fisherman

A

Chang’s father was a fisherman, who spent much time out at sea. He would often tell young Chang about his adventures, and so naturally, Chang developed in interest in marine life and culture at a young age. This is seen in the dazzling colours and tentacle-like forms in ‘Bracelet 2004’, which clearly represent the plants and creatures found within the sea.

Q

Sculptor

A

Before turning to jewellery, Chang worked as a sculptor. This influence can be seen in ‘Bracelet 2004’ which acts as a light-weight sculpture that you can fit your hand through. The bracelet has many abstract forms, made from acrylic, sticking out of its sides, giving the piece a unique shape. The bracelet can easily be thought of a piece of sculptural art, as well as jewellery.

Q

Pop-Art

A

Chang grew up in the 1960’s in Liverpool. Due to this, he was highly influenced by the ‘Pop Art’ movement which was at a large at the time. The movement was filled with vivid imagery and bright colour, which Chang channelled in ‘Bracelet 2004’. The bracelet is filled with Pop Art references due to its use of decorative and exaggerated use of colour.
