women changes
WW2 -total war, lots of married women worked for the 1st time -independence, earned an income.
1940- had to register for labour exchanges & would be sent to work in munitions factories e.g categorised into active/inactive.
-domestic service replaced by clerical/service jobs e.g teaching/receptionists/typhists
-marriage bar removed in key industries e.g teaching & BoE
-divorces increased from around 12,000 to 60,000
-sex before marriage by 40% of the pop
-fam sizes/births declined

-2M withdrew from the lab force when men returned from war -treated badly in work, paid less -60/70% of a mans wage & were discriminated against.
-inst of marriage remained strong -more marriages than ever.

-BBC said their newspapers should only be read by men
-traditional fams remained -man as head of the fam

due to ROSA they were able to be teenagers for younger -stay in education till 15 & could go onto a-levels & HE more easily -so didn’t have the burden of work of earlier generations.
-affluent society & youth wages grew twice as fast as adult equivalents -had more money to spend & consumerism identified them as a market -records, cosmetics.
-american pop, fashion, slang & glamour commercialised the teenager.
-were now self aware/centred -follow new fashion trends
-growth in influences from america e.g pop & film icons e.g Elvis Presley had a large fan base among teenagers in England.
teds -unique hairstyles, liked dancing to pop music. -aggressive & often caused trouble.
-growth of new/distinct youth groups e.g mods - listened to pop music, wore suits & rode scooters.
rockers wore leathers, listened to rock & roll & drove motorbikes - they would often clash with each other & was an organised riot in may 1964.
but downsides of the youth
