social change Flashcards
(5 cards)
social change definition
process by which society’s beliefs and attitudes create new social norms
obedience
Govt (a minority group in power) can create laws that drive social change. These laws make certain behaviours illegal, such as smoking bans, which encourages widespread public adoption and shifts in societal norms through legitimate authority.
conformity
People conform to fit in with others (NSI), like following recycling trends. They may also conform when presented with new evidence or information (ISI), such as adopting behaviours in response to climate change.
social crypto-amnesia
society adopts minority ideas but forgets their origins
strength- practical application
Understanding obedience helps governments influence behaviour (promoting healthy eating), leading to public health improvements. This benefits the economy by reducing pressure on healthcare systems and lowering long-term costs.
