Russian influence on Japan
The Russians established the Russian-American Company because they were having difficulties supplying outposts.
Fortunately for Japan, the Russians got involved in wars with Europe, which saved Japan from entering greater conflicts with Russia.
Chinese influence on Japan
China had to sign a treaty with England, so Japan became fearful as China was seen as a powerful country by japan.
Reason the population was upset with Bakufu
The crops weren’t growing because of bad weather, people were upset with the taxes. People began to support the Emperor instead of the Bakufu

Samurai began to support

Russia’s interest in Japan
by the 1800s many nations were knocking on japans doors for trade, including Russia

King Willem II of netherlands sent a letter to Bakufu reccomending that it open its doors

The modernization of Japan
When the westerners were invited
to Japan, they showed the Japanese new ideas and ways of doing things. The Japanese adopted these new ideas and ways.
Japan’s relationship wit the Ainu
The Ainu are considered to be descendants of Japan’s first indigenous people that came from
Russia over 25, 000 years ago.
Throughout most of Japanese’s history, the Ainu have not been accepted into Japanese society, as they were considered non-humans.
Don’t think twice policy
The Bakufu decided to expell all foreigners without thinking twice.
This edict began in 1825 on the advice of a government offical names Takahashi. He studied the western countries and felt that Japan should be even more restrictive about the westerners.
Changes between the Edo and Meiji period
Edo: The people were isolated and were stuck to the Japanese way of doing things.
Meiji: People began to adopt western ideas and ways of doing things. They were starting to modernize.
The Charter Oath
- Deliberative assemblies shall be widely assembled and all matters are decided by public discussion
- All classes, low and high, shall unite in vigorously the administration of affairs of state
- The common people, no less than the civil and military officials, shall each be allowed to pursue his own calling so that there may be no discontent.
- Evil customs of the past shall be broken off and everything based upon the just laws of Nature.
- Knowledge shall be sought throughout the world so as to strengthen the foundations of imperial rule.

The Dutch east India company was a company that many small companies combined into to form the Dutch east India company in
1602. This was the only group that Japan traded with, allowing them access to Deshima Island, Nagasaki. The Japanese began to learn the west because of the contact with the Dutch.
Why USA wanted formal relationship with Japan
The US wanted relationships with Japan, because Japan was on the trading route To China and the Americans wanted to set up a coal station at one of Japan’s ports so they could get fuel for their steamships. They also wanted japan to help US shipwrecked sailors on the Japanese shore.
