“I don’t know any refined…”
“I don’t know any refined enough for your taste”
Dramatic irony
Stanley is still playing along with Blanches facade that she is ‘refined’ when in reality he knows the truth about her
Stage directions describing blanches appearance when she first visits Stella’s home
“Her expression is one of shocked disbelief. Her appearance is incongruous to the setting “
Blanche is an outsider
Symbolic for complete contrast in values and appearance of the south and the north
Stanley says this to Stella when reminding her that she chose to have a life with him
"I pulled you down off them columns and how you loved it, how those flashing lights went" Shows the class warfare - Stanley conquered Stella like the north conquered the south 'Flashing lights' - Stella drawn to Stanley because of he desire she feels for him - lights a metaphor for Stanley's primary colours - also for a metaphor for truth Stanley bragging about he pulled Stella down from her elevator position and corrupted her from his Hyperbole to demonstrate Stanley's physical strength - pull down the columns
“Oh, he’s just not the type that go for jasmine perfume, but maybe…”
“Oh, he’s just not the type that go for jasmine perfume, but maybe he’s what we need to mix with our blood now that we’ve lost Bell Reve”
“Oh, he’s just not the type that go for jasmine perfume, but maybe he’s what we need to mix with our blood now that we’ve lost Bell Reve”
Explain this quote with contextual reference
Blanche justifying how Stanley lacks refinement to appreciate the finer things in life, unlike herself.
Under normal circumstances, he would be an inadequate husband for a Dubois due to his inability to appreciate subtler things in life
However
Blanche knows not to delude herself with the idea of social grandeur - she no longer belongs to southern elite - Stanley is the new elite - she and her family need his survival skills
Lacking such skills can have detrimental consequences - evidently with blanches decent into madness

Where were you! In bed with your - pollack!
Explain this quote
Blanche comes to rely heavily on the derogatory term ‘pollack’ which she uses to assert her superiority over Stanley
The fact that she deems it necessary to dominate Stanley underlines her outdated understanding of society - she believes that she is still part of the southern elite who were respected, however she that way has died and she is simply a relic of a by gone age
