What are the two types of personality in this theory?

A

-Social dominance: openness agreeableness and empathy
-Social dominance orientation: disagreeableness aggression coldness. Those lower down have less, dangerous jobs, should maintain strict hierarchy in society, believe they should stay at the top and have best education. See world as competitive jungle, have to fight for power. If stay at bottom then maintain the higher ppl’s position

How is SDO shaped?

A

-Personality and temperament (biological traits)
-Socialisation experience, trauma, education. More they are exposed to it, higher SDO (eg parents good jobs, see how they treat inferior people)
-unaffectionate socialisation result in SDO

A

-Gaucher, Friesen and Kay: dominant groups maintain dominance through skewing job adverts. Male dominated industry like engineering, adverts attract other men. Reference headstrong, rather than considerate and kind. Women feel not belong.
-Kemmelmeier: SDO correlates with discrimination. Associated with perceptions of guilt in rape trial only when dft black.
-Michinov Dambrun and Guimond showed indivs with SDO more inclined to employ people with lighter skin
-Louis et al: scales measuring personality like SDO don’t include items heavily affected by social attitudes or norms, these ignored in research. 72% disagreed white race was best race in Aus study but agreed with exclusion of asylum seekers. Social and individual factors
-Cohrs: relationship bet RWA and SD, big 5 personality dimensions and prej, RWA correlated w prej supporting Adorno

Comparisons and credibility

A

-Reductionist: don’t consider other factors explaining prejudice like competition or a separate group. Personality only cause
-RCT better as can manipulate v’s to test competition. Sherif - comp impacts prej.
-SIT: can manipulate if introduced separate group causes prej. Jane Elliot.

How good is the research for SDO?

A

-correlational: can find cause and effect, don’t know that personality causes prej just links with it. High f scale = high AP = high prej, 3rd factor like situational variables
