-The upper+ middle class can afford access to new media. They often use sites like Linked in, relating to their jobs or status.
-Jones: 1/3 of the population are digitally excluded.
-Helsper: a digital underclass are forming in the UK.
-Livingstone: the digital divide is getting worse. They can not gain skills or confidence.

Age.

A

-Digital natives: young people grew up with new media, so have more confidence.
-Young people consume a wider range: TV, the internet, video games. They get the majority of their news online eg Twitter, news sites.
-Jones: disadvantaged youths are less likely to have internet access.

Location+ global digital divide.

A

-The west are the biggest consumers of new media, creating a global digital underclass.
-Lower income countries have a lack of internet access due to poverty, lack of resources to build networks- no profit motive.
-Language barrier: 80% of the internet is in English.

A

-Men: play video games, watch videos and are more likely to have a phone.
-Women: receive more calls+ texts, use social networking sites and use the internet to relax+ look at news.
-Li+ Kirkup: the decreasing gender pay gap led to an increase of women on the internet. Women use the internet differently+ with less confidence.
