Social inequality
the unequal distribution of factors such as income, education or health across a population.
spatial inequality
the unequal distribution of factors such as income, education or health across geographic space at any scale (local, national, regional, global).
Standard of living
The ability to access services and goods. This includes basics such as food and water, clothes, housing and personal mobility.
Quality of life
The extent to which people’s needs and desires (social, psychological or physical) are met.
The Human Development Index (HDI)
It comprises the following indicators:
Life expectancy
Education
Per capita income
It then ranks countries into tiers of human development
The Gini Index
It looks at the distribution of a nation’s income or wealth, where:
0 represents perfect equality (of all money earned in the country, everyone receives an equal share)
100 represents perfect inequality (of all money earned in the country, it all goes to 1 person/group of people)
LIDCs
Low income developing countries
EDCs
emerging and developing countries
ACs
advanced countries
Absolute poverty
those living in poverty do not have the basic necessities for survival food shelter medication etc
Relative poverty
The standard of living for those living in poverty is lower than the general living standards of the rest of the social group
