Social Influence Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the 3 types of Conformity
Internalisation- when a person accepts group norms, leading to a change in both public and private opinion/behaviour- permanent and persistent
Identification- we identify with a group we want to be apart of, publicly changing our opinions/ behaviour even if we don’t agree with everything they stand for
Compliance- going along with others in public but privately not changing opinions/behaviour- superficial change
What is the explanation for conformity
Informational social influence: (need to be liked) about information, a cognitive process, occurs in ambiguous situations
Normative social influence: (need to be right) desire to behave like others and not look foolish, emotional process, occurs in situations with people you know
Strengths of both NSI and ISI -evaluations-
+ research support for ISI: more conformity in students to difficult math questions than easy, looking towards other people in situations we don’t know assuming that know better than us
+ research support for NSI: In Asch’s experiment, Pps said they felt self-conscious giving the right answer and were afraid of disapproval, conformity dropped to 12% when Pps wrote answers, Pps conforming to NSI
Limitations to both NSI and ISI -evaluations-
- individual differences for ISI: Asch found that students were less conformist then other Pps, others found less conformity in engineering students, people who are knowledgable/ confident are less influences by majority view
Individual
