Conformity
Yielding to group pressure (also known as majority influence)
Compliance
Publicly but not privately conforming to the majority to gain approval and avoid social disapproval
Eg. A public front
Identification
Public and private acceptance of the group majority in order to fit in
Eg. Like in the army, folded clothes standing straight etc.
Internalisation
Public and private acceptance of the majority influence through adoption of beliefs
Eg. Religion
Informational social influence
The result of a desire to be right. It looks for others for guidance in order to gain evidence about reality (especially in unfamiliar situations)
Eg. Starting a new school
Normative social influence
An individual conforms to the expectations of the majority in order to gain approval and avoid social disapproval
Eg. Saying you don’t like someone even if you do, because the group doesn’t like them
Cognitive dissonance
An unpleasant feeling of anxiety created by simultaneously holding two contradictory ideas
Eg. Choosing places to eat, joining friend s or sticking with what you want to do
Confederates
People who are in on the experiment (secretly working with it)

Removal of a persons personality

Everyone thinking and feeling in the same way (less personality)
Obedience
Complying with the demands of an authority figure ( a type of social influence)

A second experiment basically a remodel of Milgrams
Androcentrism
A study that it’s participants are dominated by males
Agentic state
The individuals surrenders moral responsibility for their actions and sees themselves as an agent for carrying out another persons wishes
Autonomous state
Individuals feel personally responsible for their actions
Legitimately of authority
The degree in which individuals are seen as justified in having power over others
Dispositional explanation
Explanations of behaviours such as obedience emphasise them being caused by an individuals own personal characteristics strut than the situational influences within the environment
Authoritarian personality
A person who has extreme respect for authority and is more likely to be obedient to those who hold power over them
Resistance to social influence
Not giving in to social ways or influences
Social support
The views that the individual has assistance available from others and that they are a part of a supportive network.
Locus of control
The extent to which an individual believes they can control events in their lives.
