  • April 1968 Race Relations Act illegal to discrimltate in housing and employment
    -October 1967 Abortion Act legalising abortion under certain conditions

How did some people negatively react to these acts ?

A
  • Wilson himself was uncomfortable with many of these changes and many traditionalists were outraged at the laws legalising homosexuality, abortion and contraception
  • Oct 1967 Abortion Act was though to encourage a permissive and promiscuous society by many traditionalists of the wartime generation

POINT 2: increase of those from commonwealth nations ?

A
  • many commonwealth citizens migrated to working class areas finding low paying jobs
  • made many Labour voters in urban areas dissatisfied with Labour immigration policy
  • Gov tightened immigration 65 and 68

What is the overall judgement ?

A

Positive
- Britain became more modern and welcoming society which marched neighbouring countries such as US with an ongoing civil rights movement and a youth culture
- increase in education lead to a decline in traditionalist values within the youth and a blurring of class divisions

What is a limitation to this factor ?

A

Despite these changes being modern, liberal and progressive labour still lost office in 1970 despite most of these Acts being passed after the 1966 election showing that despite this there was a general dissatisfaction with economic policy
