Psychology
The scientific study of behavior and mental processes (why people do what they do/think/feel)
Social Psychology
The scientific study of how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, of individuals are influenced by others (presence of others can be actual, imagined, or implied)
Conformity
A type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group, this change is in response to real or imagined group pressure
Automatic Mimicry
When we unconsciously imitate others expression posture, voice tone (where empathy stems from)
Normative Social Influence
Where a person conforms in order to be accepted and belong to a group, socially rewarding and avoid social rejection
Informational Social Influence
A type of social influence in which individuals modify their behavior, opinion, or beliefs based on the information they receive from others
Obedience
Changing your behavior in some way because someone with more perceived authority or power tan you ordered you to do so
Compliance
When an individual changes their behavior in response to an explicit or implicit request made by another person
Foot-in-the-door Phenomenon
The tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later to a larger request
Social Facilitation
Improved performance on simple or well-learned tasks in the presence of others
Social Loafing
The tendency for people in a group to exert less effort when pooling their efforts towards attaining a common goal than when held individually accountable
Deindividuation
Sometimes being around others can arouse and diminish feelings of responsibility, the loss of self-awareness and restraint occuring in group situations that foster anonymity
Group Polarization
The enhancement of a groups prevailing inclinations through discussion with the group, beliefs and attitudes grow strong when we discuss them with like-minded others
Groupthink
The mode of thinking that occurs when the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides a realistic appraisal of alternative, fed by overconfidence, conformity, and group polarization
Minority Influence
The power of one or two individuals to sway majorities, those in minority are more likely to sway the majority when they hold firmly to their position
Altruism
Acting to help someone else at some cost to oneself; doing something to help another person with no expectation of reward
Bystander Effect
When the presence of others discourages and individual from intervening in an emergency situation
Diffusion Of Responsibility
When people who need to make a decision wait for someone else to act instead, ex: dirty microwave scene from office
