What is health?
a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. (Not just being free of disease)
What is social well-being?
having a sense of belonging and positive relationships with other people

Differences in health status between different population groups

economic and social deprivation, occupational health inequalities, psychosocial trauma and inadequate access to health care

What is victim blaming?
blaming people for things that are out of their control - your fat b/c of your lifestyle, not your circumstances
Disease stigma
people are made to feel embarrassed or ashamed of their condition because they are told all the time that they are in control of their condition
Structural determinants of health
Shape and distribution of power and resources across the population, engendering health inequities b/w groups
Policies, laws, institutions that create disparities in distribution of SDOH and produce and maintain health inequities

In Canada: Taxation policies allow the rich to get richer (income)
In Alberta: Rent control policies allow landlords no limit on rent raises (housing)
Why does Health promotion focus on upstream casual determinates of health to make changes?
Upstream focuses on Structural DOH (laws, policies) to improve community conditions
