XYZ Affair– What caused it? What happened as a result?
The French had been using privateers to attack American ships
Adams sends 3 diplomads to work out a deal
Once in France the Diplomads learned that the head of the government sent 3 French agents to bribe the diplomads. These agents were referred to as X,Y, and Z
The Americans were outraged by this and called for war against France
Differences between Jay’s Treaty/Pinckney’s Treaty
Jay’s Treaty -signed with britain, less popular
Pickney treaty -was signed with spain,more popular

1.Creating political parties- would divide the countries
2.Getting involved in other countries battles- he said to stay neutral

Whiskey Rebellion— What was it? How did it end?
Congress passed a tax on American- made whiskey in March 1791
Farmers did not like the tax
In 1794 protesters refused to pay the tax
Washington saw the rebels as a threat to the federal government
Washington sent 13,000 militia to stop the rebellion
In November 1794, the rebellion ended without battle
who was Hamilton, Jefferson, and Knox in Washington´s Cabinet
Cabinet Members: Hamilton= Secretary of Treasury
Jefferson= Secretary of State, Knox=Secretary of War, and Osgood as postmaster General

Conflict with Native Americans
Americans continued to settle in the Northwest Territory
American Indians went to war
An American Indian Confederation under Miami chief Little Turtle defeated US forces
Washington then sent General Anthony Wayne to take charge of the frontier
Little Turtle asked he British for support but they refused
Chief Little Turtle did not think they could win- he quit his command
August of 1794 General Waye- he burned the American Indian villages and fields
In 1795: Treaty of Greenville:
Gave US access to American Indian lands in the NW Territory and gave safety to US citizens there
Indians receives $20,000 worth of goods and formal acknowledgement to lands they still held
