It literally means “clear fate”. A New York newspaper editor, John O’ Sullivan, said that it was America’s, “Manifest Destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us.” which means that it was America’s clear fate to settle the land all the way to the Pacific Ocean
