U BOAT
Germany could not compete with England’s war ships, so they created this powerful submarine.
Lusitania
BRITISH passenger ship that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U Boat. There were about 1200 people on board and over 100 were Americans.
Woodrow Wilson
USA President, Elected in 1912 and again in 1916. President during WWI.
Prime Meridian
The earth’s zero of longitude, which by passes through Greenwich, England and decides the time zones.
Equator
An imaginary line drawn around the Earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.
Latitude
Lines that run East and West or side to side. They measure the distance North and South of the equator.
(Latitude is Fatitude)
Longitude
Lines that run North and South or up and down. They measure the distance East and West of the Prime Meridian
Colonialism
A policy by which a nation exerts or maintains control over foreign lands (usually far away). The root word is COLONY.
Militarism
A strong emphasis on having a strong Army Navy and Military.
Nationalism
A strong sense of identity and connection with the country of your birth.
Nationalism is a strong force at this time because many places ad been taken over by others and forced to change who they were.
Giuseppe Garibaldi
Italian patriot and military leader who unified Italy.
Queen Victoria
Expansionist queen from 1837-1901. This period of time is called the “Victorian Era”
Otto Von Bismark
German military leader who unified Germany.
Alliance
An agreement or treaty between groups or countries to further common interests and help each other in times of trouble.
Entente
French word that means agreement or understanding between 2 or more countries.
Dual Alliance
Defense Treaty between France and Russia. (Both were concerned about Germany’s power)
Triple Alliance
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
Triple Entente
England, France and Russia
Entente Cordial
France and England recognize each other’s colonies and borders around the world
Central Powers
Originally Germany and Austria-Hungary, later they were joined by Turkey, Bulgaria and others
Allied Powers
England, France, Russia and later Japan, Italy, USA and others
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
was the nephew of Austria’s emperor and the next one to take the throne.
FRONT
The most forward point in an attack line. The farthest point in battle. Where the fighting is.
