Social Studies Review Flashcards
A timeline that displays the relationships between events and places which are occurring simultaneously (at the same time).
Multiple-Tier Timeline
Before Common Era/Common Era } BCE/CE
Before Christ/Anno Domini } BC/AD
Events occur on the timeline moving from the largest number to the smallest (BCE/CE) and then continue in increasing order (CE/AD).
Timeline Labels
- King or Queen in power
- Power is passed through the family line
- In some cases, power is shared between the monarch and other parts of government/constitution
Monarchy
- Citizens hold the power
- Citizens elect representatives to make decisions
- Can also be called indirect
Representative Democracy
- A small group of people hold the power
- The group may gain power through force, wealth, status, ace, education, etc.
Oligarchy
- No representatives
- Citizens participate in daily government functions
- Only works for smaller regions/systems
Direct Democracy
- One leader who has complete control over citizens
- Power is often taken by force
-Citizens are not represented
Dictatorship
- A government that focuses on one particular religion, using one god or supreme being
- This must occur alongside another form of government
Theocracy
- Originated in India
- Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) was the founder
- Meditation and Enlightenment
- Do not believe in a personal creator/single God
- Try to understand the meaning or nature of life within themselves
Buddhism
- Originated in Pakistan/India
- Believe in Brahman-God (also worship other gods/goddesses)
- Reincarnation
- Followers believe a person determines their destiny through the ways they live their life (Karma)
Hinduism
- Originated in Mecca, Saudi Arabia
- Founded by the prophet Muhammad
- One God named Allah
- The Qur’an is the holy text
- Worship in a mosque
- Islam is thought to be a complete way of life (5 Pillars)
Islam
- Originated in Israel
- Jesus Christ was the founder
- Bible is the holy text
- Worship in a church
- Has many denominations/parts
- Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ (10 Commandments)
Christianity
- Originated in Israel
- Founded by Hebrew people/Abraham
- Torah is the holy text
- Worship in a synagogue
- Jews believe in one God who created the universe
Judaism
